Statement

Primary research interests stem from social psychology, an investigation into cultural conditioning and the development of belief systems that ultimately affect how we interact with, and perceive each other. Essentially an attempt to understand behaviour in a social context, referencing individuals and ethnic groups. Of particular interest is political expediency, how conflict and an assertion of power are seen as devices for problem solving. This brings into question our capacity to harm, moral and patriotic attitudes in an increasingly complex world, where values and fears are challenged.

Additional interests centre around semiotics and meaning, how juxtaposing images and objects can suggest alternative narratives- where visual outcomes exist somewhere between fact, fiction and the subconscious. Andre Breton spoke of something called the objective chance process, as an active synthesis between the subjective and objective. Indeed, this theory lies at the heart of surrealism where by the displacement of objects and imagery and their reappearance in other contexts can ‘tap into’ the human psyche and autobiography of the viewer.

Support from several funding bodies has allowed travel and research to take place across the UK, Middle East, China and Australia.

Work is held in both private and public collections including, Deutsche Kreditbank AG (DKB)-Germany, Palis Advisory Berlin, Gallery Oldham, Rheged Centre and The Lock-Up, Australia.
