China, a Personal Journey

This new body of work was developed from an International Residency period in Red Gate Gallery, (798 Artzone), Beijing. Living amongst the local community offered an insight into the daily lives of ordinary people, at work and leisure. Visits to other cities such as, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Huangshan, Jingdezhen and Xi’an, enabled further research and information gathering to support ideas and visual content. Using objects, forms and imagery that reference both Chinese and British cultural history, the work attempts to tease out elements that demonstrates a common lived experience. The work acknowledges political complexities and the growth of the industrial proletariat, to reflect on the struggles and aspirations of ordinary individuals that are common in any society today. The project was supported by Wales Arts International - WAI.
